Disclosure to your end-users can be handled two ways: (1) clear and prominent language in your existing Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (default and most common), OR (2) an in-app consent modal or onboarding screen using copy similar to what follows. Both are acceptable. Choose what fits your app.
Optional: in-app modal or onboarding screen
Help support this app
This app uses GetPassive to share a small amount of your unused internet bandwidth when the app is running. We do not collect your name, accounts, files, messages, or browsing history — only your device’s IP address and basic connection data are used. Your bandwidth is used to power ethical web research and privacy tools.
You can opt out at any time in app settings.
Short version: settings screen
Bandwidth sharing is active. Your unused bandwidth is shared via GetPassive. [Manage / Turn off]
Implementation notes for developers
If you use the in-app modal approach:
- Customise the text with your app name and your own support contact.
- Link to both GetPassive's privacy policy and your own privacy policy.
- Do not activate the SDK until the user has actively selected "I Agree" or equivalent.
- Provide a clear setting to pause or turn off bandwidth sharing at any time.
- Keep a record of consent where possible, including timestamp and app version.
If you use the Terms + Privacy Policy approach:
- Add a clear and prominent paragraph describing bandwidth participation to both documents before the user installs or first launches the app.
- Provide a clear setting to pause or turn off bandwidth sharing at any time.
In either case:
- Do not use GetPassive in apps directed at children, and do not enable bandwidth sharing for end-users under 18.
